for unknown reasons

Why had I not known about this?

I can't believe it. I miss out on so much.

There are indeed limits to deluxe. Although many would have you believe otherwise.

I think I need an extended stay at a Kurort, by the way. Extremis malis extrema remedia.

Truly, the vastness of your ignorance is astounding. But it gives the rest of us something to point and laugh at, so at least it is not without value.

Psst. For a guy who knows and likes so many fancy languages...take a look at your lead...it needs a quick fix.

Boomer:

I stared at that sentence for five minutes, thinking something looked wrong. But I couldn't see it, so I just posted it.

Now I see it! Fixed!

Thanks!

Kurort! I need to be at a Kurort ASAP!

Lovely. But what extremis malis, fer chrissakes?

Posted by: Huntington at October 5, 2007 02:25 PM

Huntington:

The silliness is that a Kurort (a spa -- I will stop being pretentious for just one second) is hardly a desperate and/or drastic measure and/or remedy for a desperate and/or drastic time and/or malady.

j'adore these drawings!! thanks for the link to the Times thingy. i love her handwriting.

I agree with TED. It is only through constant derision of you that I stave off the despair inherent in living in this world.

New Yorker art!! Illustrative fiction finally receives attention!!

Posted by: jason at October 5, 2007 04:15 PM

Oh, I know, Eric (except for some, whose extremes are probably different from mine); I was just trying to cadge some non-discretion from you for a change.

Posted by: Huntington at October 5, 2007 04:26 PM

To further probe the reasons for extremis malis: I thought flip flop season was officially over.

If you didn't know about Kalman's lovely illublog before today, it's because she was slaving away in rags and shackles behind the Old Gray Lady's Iron Firewall.

Mr. Sulzberger, tear down this wall!

Vive la Résistance! Illustration wants to be free!

Eric,
I love that your writing has provoked so many into this desperate attempt to try to get at you by means of pointing out any tiny error on your part. I think they feel a little insecure because you have varied interests in the world, its languages, cultures and above all that you regularly deride aspects of American culture than many have never really taken much, if any, notice of.
Of course, it could also be jealousy because you have actually left the USA and seen something of what else the world has to offer.

Maira (and the late Tibor) Kalman (working as M&Co) have been reshaping design and culture for 25 years. As for how you missed Ms. Kalman's column in the Times, well, like New York itself, the Times has many nooks and crannies.

Actually Graham, I did it as a favor to a writer who's blog I really like. I tried to do it with humor. If I came off as oneof the infamous "grammar queens" or with any hint of jealousy, (I couldn't hope to be as witty as Eric on a regular basis...hence no blog of my own) I assure you it was not intentional.

Eric, I think I just saw your LBE here in Berlin. Is that possible?

Posted by: Aaron at October 7, 2007 03:16 PM

Woe be the day that pretension became an acceptable stand-in for originality.

Jesus, this blog is derivative. As is your taste.

Posted by: Chelsea Smartypants at October 9, 2007 04:42 PM

Kalman's blog is truly lovely. It is one of the only blogs the Times launched that I think is worthwhile.

On second thought...it's the only Times blog worth any time...at least they got one right.

The Hotel Pupp in Karlovy Bady sounds just right.
